Thank you for a great school year. It has been my pleasure facilitating learning for our classroom. This class made my first year at Dicken beyond my expectations. If I needed to know the Dicken way (or the Mike Madison Method), they were experts.

Avoiding the Summer Slide

In order to avoid summer slide, loss of school’s knowledge, use Dreambox, Lexia Core5 and Raz Kids over the summer. There is also https://www.readworks.org/. My blog,< http://headlineshubb.blogspot.com > is available for math games. I suggest a minimum of 1 hour of academics: 30- 4o minutes of reading daily and 30 minutes of math. Vary the genres you read, alternating fiction and nonfiction.

Subjects at a Glance

EDM: We are in the middle of Unit 7.  Below are the topics on the unit test. Also, we will be reviewing skills with worksheets for homework as we prepare for End of the year assessments and NWEA test.
Language Arts
       Reading: We are currently studying myths and legends in various cultures. We have reviewed how Traditional Literature is defined. Students are expected to read at least 2 Traditional literature stores by the end of May. We will also review protagonist and antagonist with a plot outline in fantasy and adventure fiction text.
      Writing/ Science: While we are studying the human body in science, we will conduct research on 1 body system and create a google slide presentation. There will be a minimum of 8 slides.

• Write the function and purpose with all organs
• Explain its interdependence with another system
• Describe diseases or illnesses that may affect children
• Share preventive help information to keep system healthy

Human Body Systems:

• How a few of the main systems work.

                 skeletal, muscular, circulatory, digestive, and nervous system

• Explain the interdependence of 2 systems at all times

EDM Unit 7: Multiplication of Mixed Numbers, Geometry and Graphs Outcomes

• Multiply mixed numbers by fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers
• Find the areas of rectangles with fractional side lengths.
• Use common denominators to divide fractions or divide fractions traditionally. (KFC)
• Use categories and subcategories to think about properties of shapes.
• Classify figures in a hierarchy sort.
• Use rules to continue patterns and write rules for relationships in in/out tables.
• Write ordered pairs from a table and graph points.

EDM Unit 8: Applications of Measurement, Computation and Graphing

• Use unit conversions to solve problems.
• Find areas of rectangles with mixed-number side lengths to solve real world problems.
• Find volumes to solve real world problems.
• Multiple and divide whole numbers and decimals to solve real- world problems.
• Create graphs.
• Use graphs to answer questions.

Reproductive Health Unit

According to district and state guidelines, the Reproductive Health Unit has changed. It can be taught in one day with basic simplistic terms, black line masters, and definitions without any videos. Students will be encouraged to refer to parents for more information. 

End of the year preparations

A letter will be sent home explaining the following: Each family will be asked to donate $20 to cover end of the year festivities. This money will cover Rolling Hills Park entrance fee and picnic/ ice cream sundae bar. The monies will also cover any decorations needed for the Promotion Celebration.

We also have families donate cookies and cupcakes for the Promotion Ceremony and Family Party. A few of our 4th grade families have gracious volunteered to assist with the set up and clean up.

Then and Now pictures

Please email to me Baby pictures and one current picture. Label email, Then and Now pictures. All photos will be renamed to Then; first name, last initial along with Now: first name, last initial. These pictures will be shown in loop at the end of the year promotion celebration to all families. Each student will share 1-3 sentences of a memory with a preselected staff member who teaches or has taught at Dicken.  A majority of the class has already written their memory and have begun to practice and memorize their memory.

April 2019

Spring is here. April showers will hopefully bring May flowers. April is a busy month as the fifth graders will begin taking our state assessment, M-STEP in the second week of April. The Window is April 8- May 3, 2019. I am a little nervous at the beginning of a window not to mention I am in a new building with "new scheduling" system.

Subjects at a Glance

Math: We are studying Unit 6, Investigations in Measurement and Decimal. Students will learn 2 ways to divide and to multiply with decimals. 
Language Arts
Reading: We will review and compare all genres during April and continue to have guided reading. This month each group choose their books.
Writing: We are concluding our study of our Favorite Colony in a persuasive, historical fiction letter. Students counter an opposing argument in the letter as one of the supporting details. Below this section are the criteria on the rubric. We will write poetry during the Month of April as a way to review our figurative Language Fridays.

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of the Road to the Revolution as will review the tactics used to win the Revolutionary War the second week in April. Next, we will learn how the Colonies became a New nation as well as review our government unit. 
Science: We will conclude the final part of Infinity and Beyond and begin Human Body science unit by the latter part of April. 

Unit 6, Investigations in Measurements and Decimal topics

• Multiplication and Division
• Multiply and divide decimals by powers of 10.
• Convert between measurement units in the metric system.
• Represent fractional data on line plots.
• Answer questions about data on line plots.
• Estimate answers decimal multiplication and division problems.
• Multiply decimals.
• Divide decimals including the divisor. 

Welcome a new Student

Pod thinkers, room 122 will have a new student, Kotaro from Japan. Our new count will be 20 students. Please take note of this when bring any items or treats to the classroom. 

M-STEP assessment

The fifth grade window is April 8- May 8, 2019. Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP)  will begin in the second week of April, assessing grades 3-8, grade 11 as various times. The current fifth graders will be have an English Language Arts (ELA, Reading and writing), Math, Social Studies and Science.

If your child is tardy or absent on a test day, he or she will have to make up the test on another day.

It is not a timed test; therefore, students are encouraged to work at a normal, calm pace while using critical thinking skills. 

During each test, we will take a 20-minute break during testing to eat a snack and get fresh air. 

Daily your child should get a peaceful night's rest and eat a balanced breakfast. Also, bring a snack and water bottle.

You will notice a decrease in classroom assignments and homework the night of a standardized test and during the test window. Please check your child's planner.
