This week in Room 106, Week 20

This week was beyond busy: 2 NWEA test, 1 Math unit test, and a field trip.

Below are a few I- can statements from this week:

I can explain both perspectives of the encounter of the Native Americans and Europeans in Michigan in early 1600’s.

I can choose a perspective and write a historical fiction journal entry/ narrative with a realistic conflict and solution.

I can show feelings in my narrative.

I can review and assess my knowledge of quadrilaterals, perimeter, area and measurement.

I can read a thermometer.

I can begin to research weather patterns, clothing, and food in a seasonal destination for fictional vacation in February: sunny beach, snowy activity, hiking, and camping/ fishing.

I can observe weather in an array of environments. (field trip)

I sent Class list for optional Valentine’s cards or treats.  The class count is 24; if a student chooses to create or share Valentine’s cards, he or she must give one to everyone in the class. In the event, a student does not provide one for every student, that students cards will be collected. All students will receive a bag to decorate for their collecting Cards. We exchange cards, eat cookies and play 1 or 2 games.

I need of 2 basketballs for our basketball court. Please consider donating a new or gently used ball for practice and play.

Next week, we have a field trip in the morning on Friday, 1/31. We will return for lunch; therefore, students do not need a special lunch. All of the chaperone spots are taken. Thank you to the volunteers.

Below are a few I-can-statements:

• I can find perimeter of quadrilaterals and non-rectangles.
• I can find area of rectangles using the correct units (squared).
• I can write a minimum of 2 paragraph letter to a pen pal at University of Michigan, using both an expository and narrative paragraph.
• I can find summary of an article by using key words and phrases.
• I can read a hybrid text and identify the type of text.
• I can identify Hunters in the sky and the food chain. (Leslie Science Center)
• I can discuss the perspective and point of view of the Native Americans with Europeans in early history using the book Encounter by Jane Yolen.
• I can explain how Chinese New Year is celebrated.

Please encourage your child to do his or her best and avoid being a "clicker" someone who clicks answers without reading or solving problems or completes the test too fast under 30 minutes.

We survived the first week back from break. We celebrated our first week by having free read Friday and reading with a buddy of our choice. We began learning about our

• I can identify quadrilaterals naming multiple names with evidence.
• I can find perimeter and area of rectangles. 
• I can solve word problems with perimeter. 
• I can listen to historical perspectives from early 1800's and identify important information. 
• I can explain how describing someone by the content of their character is preferred over race or other negative labels. (Hallway project)

Welcome back January 2020

I hope you have relaxed and had a great winter break. This week will have minor challenges as we are adjusting to coming back to school after a 2-week break. Homework will resume on Friday. Students are encouraged to visit my blog <click Math games> and practice math facts for 10 minutes a day this week. Beginning next week, practice a few days a week.

Students are allowed to submit Reading challenge hours to me by Wednesday morning, 1/8/2020 or via email.
Submit the following:

Student's name and hours read. The challenge was 7 hours over 15 days; however, I am receiving all hours read to make a fair assessment of the challenge for 3rd graders. 

University of Michigan will begin its interviews during lunch hours and 9:20- 10:20 AM on Tuesdays for students who turned in consent forms for the Empowerment program teaching social emotional skills for students. There is one more form that needs to be signed by those families. It will be sent home immediately and to be returned as soon as possible.

Please remind students that toys are not permitted at school; however, I allow slime and other fidget items to aide with calming and attention. I have been decluttering my home and I am gifting small toys/ trinkets to a special treat bin. Upon having his or her name pulled by selection, the item will be sent home. (FYI)
