Below are the I-can statements from the past week:

• I can state the natural characteristics and resources in Michigan.
• I can write a paragraph describing the natural characteristics from a map.
• I can describe the attributes of geometric shapes. 
• I can compare geometric shapes: quadrilaterals. 
• I can code digital animation games alone and with a partner on SCRATCH. (PLTW)
• I can find the meaning of unknowns words in grade level text using a variety of strategies: implore and procession. 
• I can reread the sentence slowly and the sentence before and after the unknown to find the meaning, using in my head, picture clues and text clues. 

Project Leads the Way ends this Friday, 12/20/19. Please help me say, Thank you to Mrs. Kipp-Dohn, as she concludes her assignment at Dicken. Hopefully, she is scheduled to return to Dicken in the Fall. 

Over break, there will be a reading challenge of 7 hours which averages about 45 minutes a day. I am not sending homework; however, I would like students to practice math facts (0, 1's 2's, 5's and 10's). Use a variety of methods to practice: paper and pencil, flash cards, and website games/ apps.
On my blog there is a link under Math games that will allow your child to pick a drill (practice) game to practice facts. A couple times a week is suffice.

University of Michigan Empowerment Program

There is still time to sign up for the free 12-1week program offered only for 1st and 3rd graders at Dicken. The program will teach life social skills and conflict resolution at Dicken. More than 1/2 of the class has signed up. University of Michigan will conduct interviews as a baseline to gauge where the students are prior to beginning the program.

• You read ________. Does that make sense?
• Look at the picture to help you read the word.
• Think about what is happening in the story right now.
• Go back to the beginning of that sentence and start it again.
• Skip over the word and continue reading until the end of the sentence. Now, go back to the beginning of the sentence and start again.

5. Friday is dress like a snowflake or snowman day.

• I can use prior multiplication facts to add or subtract an equal group. 
• I can write a pen pal letter to a University of Michigan student with paragraphs and answering questions. 
• I can look for chunks in unknown words to decode.
• I can look for words in unknown words to decode.
• I can use the base words in unknown words to decode.
• I can look for the physical features in a region in Michigan.

• I can learn to code with a partner. (PLTW)

 A few sheets were sent home to encourage parents to permit his/ her child to participate in a University of Michigan program teaching Empowerment to first and third graders at Dicken for 1 hour during a 12-week period in early part of 2020. The program will focus on managing stress, strategies to reduce stress and solve everyday problems. Below are the benefits:

1. Each class will receive $200 for supplies.
2. Part I, parents will receive $15 after 1st survey. (online)
3. Part II, parents will receive $15 after 2nd survey upon completion of the program. (online)
4. Part III, parents who complete a 6-month follow survey will receive $15. (online)

All monetary gifts will be VISA gift cards mailed to the home addresses.

(Two Day Week prior to break)

• I can write my favorite candy paragraph, using a graphic organizer. (It began the week after Halloween.)
• I can sign into Google Drive and Google docs. (Many steps)
• I can publish my favorite candy paragraph. 
• I can plan how to solve a multiple step math word problem. 
• I can plan a project with all simple machines and 1 magnet. (PLTW)
• I can read a fiction story about a nonfiction topic and state the genre with evidence. 
• I can draft my pen pal letter with K-grams. 

Although this was a short week, we accomplished many small and big feats.
Reading Challenge was to read a minimum of 4 hours over the break.
